Reflecting on Impact – Water for Good’s Achievements in 2024

February 16, 20254 min read

Key Accomplishments of 2024

  • Expanding Reliable Water Access

In 2024, Water for Good brought safe, reliable water to 85,000 new people across five countries. By installing and maintaining water points, we ensured that communities no longer need to choose between drinking unsafe water or walking miles to fetch it.

  • Sustaining What We Build

Unlike many initiatives that struggle with maintenance, our programs kept 95% of our wells functional, a stark contrast to the global average of 60%. This was made possible by our commitment to ongoing maintenance services and training local leaders to oversee these systems.

  • Promoting WASH Practices for Lasting Change

Our "Vision of a Healthy Village" program continued to educate families on essential WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) practices. This year, over 50,000 households adopted healthier habits such as handwashing, safe water storage, and proper waste disposal, leading to a measurable decline in waterborne illnesses.

  • Strengthening Local Economies

The ripple effects of reliable water extend beyond health. In Uganda, Robert, a carpenter, built over 300 latrine doors this year, creating safer sanitation for families while earning a steady income. In another village, 11-year-old Gideon started a micro-business making handwashing devices, which he sold to neighbors to fund his education.

Stories from the Field: Hope in Action

In 2024, Water for Good’s impact was felt in the stories of individuals and communities whose lives have been transformed. These stories are a testament to the power of reliable water, sanitation, and hygiene practices in creating lasting change.

Florence’s Story: A Future Without Fear

For years, Florence’s village in the Central African Republic faced daily struggles. The nearest water source was a polluted river, teeming with bacteria and contaminants. Fetching water was a grueling task that fell primarily on women and children, consuming hours each day. The consequences were dire:

  • Health Risks: Children frequently fell ill with waterborne diseases, including diarrhea and typhoid.

  • Missed Opportunities: Kids were too sick to attend school regularly, and parents, burdened by caregiving, couldn’t focus on work.

  • Economic Strain: Money that could have been used for education or food went toward medical expenses.

This year, Florence’s story took a dramatic turn. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Water for Good installed a reliable water point in her village.

  • Close Access: The water source is now just steps away, saving countless hours that were once spent walking to fetch water.

  • Improved Health: Families now drink clean water, significantly reducing illnesses.

  • Empowered Lives: Children attend school consistently, and parents have time to focus on income-generating activities.

Florence shared her gratitude: “Now, we have clean water just a few steps away. Our children are healthy, and we have time to work and send them to school. It has brought peace to our community.”

Bringing Communities Together

In Tanzania, another story of transformation unfolded—this time, centered around the power of community and education. Water for Good partnered with local churches to spread vital WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) practices. Church leaders became trusted ambassadors for change, inspiring families to embrace healthier habits.

Key WASH Lessons Shared:

  1. Handwashing: Families learned how washing hands with soap prevents the spread of disease. Simple devices like "tippy-taps" were built throughout the village to encourage frequent handwashing.

  2. Sanitation: Workshops taught villagers how to construct and maintain basic latrines, reducing open defecation and water contamination.

  3. Clean Water Storage: Families were educated on keeping water safe from collection to consumption, using clean containers and secure storage practices.

The result was a healthier, more united community:

  • Health Improvements: Reports of waterborne illnesses, especially among children, dropped dramatically.

  • Economic Growth: Villagers, with more time and better health, began engaging in small businesses, boosting household incomes.

  • Stronger Bonds: Churches became hubs of education and support, strengthening relationships among community members.

One church leader reflected, “When people come together for a common purpose, transformation happens. This isn’t just about water—it’s about dignity, health, and hope.”

The Ripple Effect of Hope

These stories highlight how the work of Water for Good goes beyond installing wells. It’s about empowering individuals, families, and communities to sustain their progress and build a brighter future. The ripple effect of clean water is undeniable, touching every aspect of life—from health and education to economic stability and social cohesion.

Donor Impact: The Heart of “Let Hope Flow”

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our donors. In 2024 alone:

  • Donors funded 200 water points, providing clean water to thousands.

  • Monthly givers supported maintenance crews, ensuring long-term reliability.

  • Business partners sponsored WASH programs, helping villages achieve sustainable change.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we celebrate this year’s successes, we remain deeply committed to our mission. The challenges are vast—703 million people still lack access to reliable water—but together, we can make lasting change.

In 2025, we aim to:

  • Expand our reach to 100,000 new people.

  • Pilot innovative technologies to improve water point efficiency.

  • Train 1,000 community leaders to sustain progress.
